Camp Acres – Week 13

After the incident of bunny heatstroke last week, baby bunny made it through a week of oppressive humidity and heat before succumbing. I was honestly crushed, since I was on vacation at the time, and I don’t think that the people watching my rabbits put in the electrolyte solutions. We also had a button quail stick its leg through the cage wire and break it, and it died of shock. Bloo recited “Oh Captain my Captain” and sanging “Nearer my God to Thee” before chucking the quail into the woods.

A hole ripped through the wire mesh of the feeder in the bottom cage, which means that the boys will be fed in a metal tin for now. This makes a bigger mess, but I didn’t have anything to repair/replace it.

Not to mention the two flat tires on my car. Just can’t catch a break.

I also got a leash and harness that the Dutch rabbit Oreo can use. Oreo’s confirmation is very hideous, and I was going to sell her as a breeding doe, but I can’t, in good consciousness, do that.

The black New Zealands do get out and get petted, but the baby Californians steal the show! I can put them into a ring of girls, and they will just wander around, getting petted and falling asleep. Oreo also just hangs out in the grass.

The chickens are doing VERY well in the coop, even the two with broken legs. Sarah from work is taking one of them, and I brought two more of them home to process last night (leaving a total of 6 at camp). They were 4.8 and 4.7 lbs after slaughter, and cleaned up very nicely, with a dress ratio of 50%ish. My dog was THRILLED to get a “chicken salad” for dinner last night!

Last week, I had two dogs, nine rabbits, and nine chickens for a total of 20 animals. This week, I have 8 rabbits, 2 dogs, and 6 chickens, for a total of 16 animals.

Camp ends at the end of next week, and I am not 100% sure what to do with my baby Californians. Michelle from the horse barn wants one, which leaves me two. I don’t know if I could get away with having them at the apartment complex. I need to add urine guards to the cages, as well as cage hardware. Placing straw and sawdust underneath? Using a charcoal air filter? I also may try putting them up on Craigslist.
